Wavering Egyptians vote for president
CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptians, choosing their leader freely for the first time in history, voted for a second day on Thursday in an election that is a fruit of last year's popular revolt against Hosni Mubarak. After six decades under authoritarian, military-backed rule, Egypt's 50 million voters can decide whether to entrust the most populous Arab nation to an Islamist president for the next four years, as well as the Islamist-led assembly they chose earlier. But secular candidates like ex-Arab League chief Amr Moussa and Mubarak's last premier Ahmed Shafiq are in with a chance. ...

Iran talks with world powers hit snag over sanctions
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iran accused world powers on Thursday of creating "a difficult atmosphere" that had hindered talks on its atomic energy program, signaling a snag in diplomacy to defuse fears of a covert Iranian effort to develop nuclear bombs. The nub of the dispute appeared to be Iran's demand for fast relief from economic sanctions as part of any deal for it to stop higher-grade uranium enrichment, a pathway to nuclear arms, whereas Western powers insisted Tehran must first shut it down. ...

U.S. drone strike kills 10 in northwest Pakistan: officials
MIRANSHAH, Pakistan (Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike on suspected Islamist militants in northwest Pakistan killed 10 people on Thursday, Pakistani intelligence officials said, an attack likely to raise tensions in a standoff with Washington over NATO supply routes to Afghanistan. The pilotless drone aircraft attacked a compound in a village in North Waziristan, a day after a similar attack killed four suspected militants in the same region. "The drone fired two missiles at the compound. We believe it was being used by militants," one of the Pakistani officials said. ...

Divided Syrian opposition to choose new leader
AMMAN (Reuters) - The main Syrian National Council opposition group said it had accepted the resignation of its president, setting the stage for a showdown between the powerful Muslim Brotherhood and its political rivals over who will be the new leader. The internal conflicts have come to a head over the position held by Burhan Ghalioun, a secular sociologist backed by the Brotherhood, who offered to step down as leader of the 313-member council last week if a replacement could be found. ...

Jobless claims little changed last week
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New claims for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week, while two reports on manufacturing suggested the economy continued to expand moderately. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits slipped 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 370,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The four-week moving average, considered a better measure of labor market trends, dropped 5,500 to 370,000. Claims have barely budged in the past four weeks, indicating a marginal improvement in the pace of job creation after April's disappointing 115,000 gain in nonfarm payrolls. ...
