Dyslexia Screener
Dyslexia is a difficulty in learning to read, write and spell, but more children show such difficulties than are actually dyslexic. Therefore, we must distinguish between individuals who meet clinical criteria for dyslexia and others who, through lack of opportunity, lack of adequate teaching, disadvantage or illness, may also have failed to learn as expected.
It is possible in fact to distinguish three broad groups of individuals:
1. There are those who fail to learn to read, write and spell at the level of their contemporaries, but this is regarded as unsurprising given that they are slow to learn everything else. Research, such as that on Direct Instruction, shows that these children, if taught in a direct, positive and structured way, can achieve excellent progress in literacy.
2. Children may underachieve through some non-dyslexic specific learning difficulty, arising from behavioural, attentional or motivational causes.
3. Still other children fail to learn the skills of literacy, in both favorable and unfavorable circumstances, because of a processing difficulty, that is, some inaccuracy or inefficiency in the management of information. Such cognitive difficulties are distinctive and reflect our research understanding of the genetic and neuropsychological background to dyslexia.
